Job Introduction

The BBC Director General Tony Hall announced in October 2013 a major new strategy to re-position the BBC in the lives of our audiences: to create a personalised engagement. The project delivers to our world class products (iPlayer, Playlister, Sport among others) and reaches millions of audience members every week. As we assemble our development team to deliver on this promise over the coming years, this is an opportunity to help shape our teams and our ways of working.

You will be working on iVote, BBC’s Online Voting System, providing free, accessible and scalable voting solution for votes run across the BBC including leading shows, such as the Apprentice, The Voice, and Strictly Come Dancing. You will interface with brilliant people across the BBC, help deliver fantastic content and hone your technical excellence through innovation.

Role Responsibility

We are seeking to recruit a Senior Web Developer with solid understanding of engineering principles and demonstrable experience in creating web applications using server side and client side technologies. You will be expected to take a lead in the design, engineering and implementation of web applications in order to deliver robust industry-leading solutions.

Build well designed, scalable Object-oriented web applications using PHP and modular JavaScript, as well as semantic and accessible HTML5 and CSS3.
Lead technical design and build of front-end components (presentation, templating, client-side behaviour, integration of data services, etc) where appropriate.
Advise the Product Manager or Technical Project Manager to ensure all the possibilities are explored and that products achieve the best possible look, feel and functionality.

The Ideal Candidate

Excellent technical understanding of working with Object-oriented PHP5, PHPUnit, and MVC frameworks such as Zend.
Strong JavaScript development skills – understanding of Object-oriented JavaScript, Closures, AMD modular design, AJAX technologies and working with libraries such as JQuery and Require.js.
Strong HTML and CSS skills (HTML5, CSS3) and dynamic stylesheets (Sass).
Experience of using JavaScript test frameworks (e.g. Jasmine, QUnit).

Interview Process

Interviews will take place on 24th and 25th June. If you are shortlisted, you will be sent a short technical test on 20th June to complete prior to your interview.
